OBRIS MORGAN Nevon

By TLex Introducing Obris Morgan and their debut divers model, the 'Nevon'. OM, who are a Hong Kong based watch company have four watch series: 'F' Flieger type, 'R' Retro, 'D' Diver type, and 'T' Tactical type.



All of their watches are assembled and tested in-house. Although their watches are 'affordable', they are still subjected to stringent quality control, insuring that each and every automatic movement is reliable and accurate.



The Nevon, with its clean, classic vintage good looks makes use of a 'Flieger' type case, only stretched to a more substantial size. It has been constructed from 316L Stainless steel. Dimensions inc. 43mm diameter, 14mm thickness with a lug to lug width of 49mm and a lug width 22mm.



The case has a water-resistance of 20 ATM / 200 meters. It is fitted with: a 120 click-type uni-directional rotational timing bezel, a Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on its inside and a solid 316L Stainless steel caseback.



The bezel is 'sterile' except for a 12hr luminous marker. The caseback is engraved with the 'OB' logo. Both the screwdown crown and case are available in three finishes: micro bead-blasted, brushed or black PVD.



The watch dial, which is in black, gray or navy is with thickly printed (white) BGW9 SuperLuminova indices. The mirror finished diamond cut skeletonized hour hand, second hand and yellow serpent-head minute hand have been filled with BGW9 SuperLuminova. BGW9 emits a blue light.



The watch is powered by a Japanese made Miyota 8215 automatic calibre with a frequency of 21,600 bph (beats per hour) an accuracy of +/- 10 sec/day.



The movement is non-hacking - meaning when the crown is extended during time changing the second hand continues to sweep. The movement is held in place by a 316L Stainless steel movement holder.



The Nevon come on a  5 links 316L Stainless steel bracelet. It has a total length of 185mm and thickness of 5mm. The total weight of the watch is 240g.



Here's the interesting part - the watches are priced between as little as 249USD and 269USD. There are a total 14 different case finishes, dial and handset configurations! That's a lot of watch for a very modest amount of money.

Officina Subacquea ARGONAUTH

By TLex I must admit, I don�t know that much about Offcina Subacquea. I came across them through Facebook either from an advertisement of by someone adding me to a group.

This is what I do know. The Italian dive watch brand is headed up by a Fabrizio Vallesi�s whose love of the diving combined with the use of modern dive watch technologies has resulted in the Argonauth �

Its specifications include: a 47mm in diameter case with: curved Sapphire crystal, a unidirectional bezel, a screwdown cashback and crown positioned at 4 o�clock and a water resistance of 1200 meters.



Power comes from a Swiss made, Sellita SW200 automatic movement. Looks pretty cool � always nice to see something different! ;)

BRERA ProDIVER [no fashion diver]

By TLex Since they first launched in 2008 Brera Orologi, have been making a name for themselves with their stylish timepieces which are known for offering contemporary Italian styles combined with Swiss reliability but at an obtainable price-point.



Brera have been particularly successful in Japan, one of the world�s most savvy watch-buying markets and one that is not willing to compromise, particularly when it comes to their dive watches.



In short Japanese consumers will only consider a watch bearing the name �diver� if it is certified as such.



This pushed Brera to totally rethink their dive watches or should we say divers-styled watches (as they were back then);



and so began almost 3 years of development of a professional divers watch that would not only appeal to the Japanese consumer but would be able to proudly stand alongside any other professional divers model.



The new Brera PRODIVER is that watch, a diver with a premium build that blends both modern and vintage styles while achieving ISO 6425 compliance for an official diving instrument certified by the International Organization for Standardization as defined by the rigorous criteria laid out for dive watches that insists upon �



a dive-time preselecting device protected against inadvertent manipulation; legibility of the dial and visibility in the dark; magnetic-, shock-, and chemical-resistance; strap durability, and � most important of all

The Prodiver has an imposing 47mm case with beveled angles that have been sculpted from high-grade 316L Stainless steel that has been either sandblasted finished or has a matte grey or rose gold IP-treatment �



while its components such as the chrono-pushers, crown and bezel have contrasting high-polished surfaces.



The chrono-pushers have been anodized to color-match elements such as the dial, hands or bezel track. I must admit I�m really digging the grey IP version � very unique!



On to the dial with its multi-level construction and wave pattern that has been designed for maximum legibility - so important that ISO has clearly delineated which elements must be absolutely clearly legible at a distance of nearly ten inches:



the time (with the minute hand obviously distinguishable from the hour hand), elapsed time on the timing bezel, and an indication that the watch is running (via a visible end-of-life indicator).



Finally, a powerful Swiss ISA 8371/2010 movement promises precision, safe under an extra-thick Sapphire crystal and protected against the elements by a screwdown crown system and chrono-pushers that have all been threaded to fit into the case precisely.

RESSENCE Type-5 DIVER

By TLex And now for something completely different! This is the TYPE-5, the divers evolution if you will of the RESSENCE family that includes the TYPE-1 and TYPE-3 with their ground-breaking time-reading displays, a signature style of the brand.

Drawing inspiration from humble sea turtle, with its aqua-dynamic shape that allows it to glide effortlessly through the oceans, the TYPE-5 with its seamlessly integrated unidirectional divers bezel uses advanced materials such as Grade-5 Titanium and is designed to meet ISO 6425 standards for a divers watch. It has a total weight of just 87g.



RESSENCE claim that the TYPE-5 is the first mechanical watch to be perfectly readable underwater regardless of the viewing angle thanks to its use of a distinctively unique means of display without the use of traditional hands.

Instead, the hours, seconds and the oil temperature gauge sit in revolving discs, which in turn orbit inside the main disc of the minute display, which itself is continuously revolving - so this patented orbital display system is an integral part of the dial.



This complication is known as the ROCS or Ressence Orbital Convex System. It is a first in the history of watchmaking and employs a specially-modified 2824 automatic caliber that gives the minutes, and hence the base calculation of time, from which is extrapolated all the other temporal indications on the dial.

RESSENCE had always wanted its TYPE-5 to be a dive watch that could hold its own against any other diver on the market. However they chose not to use an over-sized case or thick crystal to achieve this rather filling the ROCS and its 142 components, including the dial in 37.5ml of oil.



From my experience oil-filled dive watches tend to have really extreme depth-ratings. Think Bell & Ross Hydromax with its 11100 meters of water-resistance or the 12000m Sinn UX, so is it a surprise that the TYPE-5 only manages 100m! Well the difference with Type-5 and other oil-filled divers watches is that uses a mechanical movement not a quartz ,which is a world first.

The laws of hydraulics state that a liquid cannot be compressed, so the oil in the TYPE-5 compensates for pressure underwater. It also keeps all components constantly lubricated. And since they are suspended in a liquid, they are lighter and hence require less power to move, which in turn improves time-keeping.



Another advantage of using of oil, crucial to the success of a dive watch is that it cancels out what is known as Total Internal Reflection. Typically, when underwater, a traditional dive watch needs to be viewed straight on in order to be read properly - otherwise refraction turns the glass into a mirror. But not with an oil-filled watch: this gives it complete legibility whatever the angle of view.

The TYPE-5�s internal architecture comprises two halves - the upper chamber, comprising the ROCS 5, filled with oil; and a lower, dry chamber containing the movement, divided from the upper by way of a Grade-5 Titanium, hermetically-sealed membrane.



To transmit the primary minute information from the movement to the ROCS, the TYPE-5 ingeniously uses connected micro magnets - while a number of protective measures ensure the magnetic fields these create do no harm to the regulator.

It is another nod to TYPE-5�s inspiration of the sea turtle: much like the watch uses the natural phenomena that are magnetic fields to move, so sea turtles use them to find their way through the oceans.



The TYPE 5 cleverly compensates the use of oil, as its volume in the watch will fluctuate with temperature. The watch is therefore fitted with a system of seven small bellows. These compress when, with rising temperature, the oil volume increases, or expand if the temperature drops and the volume decreases �

the result perfectly stabilizes the fit of the oil within the watch. The system is directly connected to the oil temperature gauge on the dial - so the TYPE-5 owner can see a representation of the bellows capacity in action.



The TYPE-5 has no crown - rather, the caseback is used both for winding and setting the time of the watch. But, to ensure maximum water-resistance, a new case-back has been specially developed for the TYPE-5. Dubbed the Ressence Compression Lock System, or RCLS, it has a system for the locking and compression of the gasket, with two positions, �lock� and �set�.



The TYPE-5 comes in two versions: the TYPE-5B, black dial and polished/satin Titanium finish. �TYPE-5BB all-black with a black DLC coating. It price is, wait for it � 31500�!!!

I applaud Ressence for daring to do something so different; however I�m not entirely convinced that this a proper dive watch based purely on its 100 meters of WR. Nevertheless, it is an elegantly and inventively designed piece of kit but there�s no way I�d shell out that much for one, sorry!

ALBERT RIELE Challenger 300M

I can�t say I�ve come across the Albert Riele brand before, despite their 135 years of history!



The Challenger has a 43mm Stainless steel case that has been fitted with divers features such as: a screwdown crown and caseback,

an anti-reflective Sapphire crystal and water-resistance to 300 meters. I believe the caseback has olden day�s divers helmet engraved on the back.



Power comes from a Swiss made SELITA SW200 automatic mechanical movement.

FILSON Dutch Harbor WATCH

By TLex Introducing the Filson Dutch Harbor Watch which has been inspired by the pioneering dive watches of the 1950s.



Filson is a Seattle, Washington, United States-based, privately owned outfitter and manufacturer of goods for outdoor enthusiasts.



The Dutch Harbor Watch is the brands first divers model � and not a bad looking watch it is and with a pretty good specification, too.



The Ducth Harbor Watch�s 43mm case comes in either brushed Stainless steel with polished bevels, brushed Stainless steel or with a sandblasted finish with a black PVD coating.



All watches in the Dutch Harbor collection have a Stainless steel casebacks with a brass PVD plating and engraved Filson logo. It is secured by six screws.



The dial comes in just one color which is black matte velvet. Swiss SuperLumiNova has been used on the accents on hands, index and at intervals on the divers bezel.



Divers features include: a unidirectional timing bezel, a curved, scratch-resistant Sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, screwdown crown and pressure-tested to 30 atm the equivalent of 300 meters of water-resistance.



The Dutch Harbor Watch is powered by a Shinola Argonite 715 quartz movement. Each watch has been hand-assembled in Detroit in the US and is covered under the comprehensive, best-in-class Shinola warranty.

GRUPPO Gamma INSTRUMENTS

By TLex Introducing Gruppo Gamma Watches of Singapore, a young online watch brand that has quickly grown along with a loyal group of followers on FACEBOOK.

Gruppo Gamma watches have a strong vintage military style of the likes of some the very earliest Rolexes or Panerais.



The designs probably lean a little more towards Italian Naval brands such as Anonimo or Ennebi and like them it can trace many of its styling cues back to those iconic historic Italian military watches.

While Gruppo Gamma�s watches are of a derivative Italian Naval style their current models are by no means copies or homages rather modern and affordable interpretations of dearly loved historic styles.



Gruppo Gamma�s debut diver was the Bronze Vanguard, a retro-inspired design with some nice contemporary details; perhaps the type of watch the Rolex Ref. 6152 might have turned out to be if it had continued to evolve.

Their earlier series, the Genesis is heavily based on the tool watches worn by Italian Navy commandos in the 50s and has evolved from the Mk I to the current Mk III.



For the Mk III Genesis Gamma has reinterpreted the dial design, giving it a twist not found in the usual homages.

They have also used the new Swiss-made Sellita SW-290 caliber alongside the Japanese calibers such as the Seiko SII NH35, Miyota 8215 and 9015.



Gruppo Gamma use all the typical tool watch materials that are popular, today: Sapphire crystal, marine grade Stainless, Bronze and Titanium.

While their watches boast the latest in dive watch technologies the use of high-quality materials, they are affordable with prices ranging from 400 � 700USD.
